About the project
Challenge
The main challenge was exploring the integration of a sense that remains largely unexplored in the beauty industry: hearing. Accustomed to enhancing the scent, texture, and visual appeal of our products, I wanted to take a speculative approach to introducing a fourth sensory dimension into beauty.
Approach
The approach began with researching how sound waves are translated into electrical signals in the brain, and how different objects and materials produce sound frequencies.
Building on this research, I speculated on a skincare brand structured around distinct frequency-based product lines, ranging from high to low frequencies. Each line would explore how sound, material properties and sensory perception could interact, drawing on research into the neurological effects of different frequencies and materials.
The packaging became an extension of this concept: a visual translation of sound frequencies, transforming something invisible and intangible into a tangible visual and material experience.
Result
NOIR introduces a product system built around different sound frequencies, each expressed through its own material language. The packaging translates these otherwise invisible frequencies into tangible design elements, creating a cohesive visual system that connects neuroscience, sound and skincare.
The result is an exploration of how beauty packaging can move beyond traditional sensory cues and become a medium for communicating and experiencing sound.
